A stun gun can afford great protection from attackers and muggers when operated carefully and correctly. However, incorrect usage can actually lead the user into greater trouble than he/she bargained for.

A stun gun is designed to draw electric charge from a battery and deliver it to the attacker through two metal prongs usually located towards the top. This current interferes with the nervous system of the attacker by preventing the signals between brain and muscles from passing through. This results in a temporary paralysis, or inability to move properly.

How to handle a stun gun properly:

Do not rush when handling the gun, and hold it steadily before you exit the vehicle or place of shelter.

Before you exit the vehicle, turn the gun on, but do not touch the trigger. Wait till you are in the open, and ready to use the stun gun before you touch the trigger.

Do not hold the stun gun close to you, but hold it out steadily. Brandishing it in the air can be dangerous as even a small touch can disable you.

To disable the attacker quickly, target the shoulder and hip areas as it paralyzes the limbs, preventing a possibly dangerous retaliation.

Do not pull the gun away after the initial contact with the attacker, but keep it in contact until the attacker is completely down.

The stun gun must be tested at frequent intervals to make sure it is working.

In case of an emergency, keep an extra battery in your car. Ensure that this battery is fully charged.

Check with your local law enforcement agency to make sure that carrying a stun gun is legal in your state or city.

After each use, turn the gun off, and touch the prongs to something metallic. This ensures that all residual charge on the prongs is released.

Keep the stun gun in a safe case or covering to prevent accidental discharge. Do not keep the stun gun under the car seat, as a stray charge may cause the gas tank to catch on fire.
