A few years ago, constantly having a map of the world at your fingertips seemed impossible. However, today it is a common amenity. Using cell phone GPS people with navigation systems in their phone can directions to anywhere. In addition, GPS in cell phones provides assistance for police and investigators during emergency 911 and missing person situations. This modern development continues to gain popularity.
So, how does it work? GPS works by sending out signals that are picked up by GPS receivers. The Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) analyzes the signal and relays the information on to the user. Although originally designed for government use, the ability of GPS to determine the position, speed, and direction of a cell phone has brought the popularity of cell phone GPS into the lives of ordinary citizens.
Many people wonder how we tracked cell phones before GPS. This was done using a method called triangulation. This works by determining which three cell phone towers to which the phone is closest. We can then determine the approximate location of the cell phone. Now that cell phone GPS is available, though, we choose to use it instead of triangulation due to its accuracy. Cell phone GPS can pinpoint the location of a cell phone within about five meters, which is up to ten times the accuracy given to us by triangulation.
The use of cell phone GPS have helped to save lives and continue to help. Since the cell phone GPS is nearly pinpoint accurate, it can help with both emergency 911 calls as well as missing person situations. For instance, if a person is missing, and his or her cell phone is left on, the phone can be traced using the GPS. This is an amazing advantage to the investigation. Today, most cell phones have GPS capabilities so when someone calls 911, the phone sends the GPS information to the 911 operator.
Cell phone GPS has proven itself to be very helpful in emergency situations. However, it has also made its way into the lives of ordinary citizens, in the form of navigation systems. Many modern cars have GPS systems in them. In the last few years, cell phone service providers have developed applications of this same type. These applications, such as Verizon Wireless' VZ Navigator, give the user step-by-step direction to any desired place. Many of them even offer voice commands, like "Turn left at the next intersection."
There has been a major growth in the GPS cell phone technology over the past few years. The helpful and convenient features that used to be used only by the government but can now be utilized by ordinary people in their everyday life. The small size, great accuracy and easy mobility has made the GPS cell phone increasingly popular and we will most probably continue to see growth in its features and usability continually each year.
