How exactly does a company in such a competitive and ruthless market sell more cell phones? One answer: produce new "green" phone models. Samsung, the global Korean consumer electronics corporation, announced during the Seoul World IT Show, their plans to offer two environmentally friendly handsets. The W510 is the very first. Manufactured from corn-based bioplastic, the W510 is free from risks associated with hazardous heavy metals, like lead. Hg and Cd.

This is the earliest Samsung bioplastic-based telephone. On the other hand At the CES in January, it was discovered that Samsung was among several big consumer electronics manufacturers to utilize the unconventional material. Fujitsu demonstrated a notebook computer with a case made of bioplastic. Additionally, the 3310 Evolve model, newly introduced by the mobile phone giant Nokia, a cell phone partially constructed from biomaterials.

Getting rid of petroleum-based plastics is an excellent proposition, however, it is currently known that plastics are not sustainable, but corn can be a replacement for fuel. Our hope is that Samsung's later models will convert to a more sustainable, next generation state of art bioplastic even though we know, the behind-the-scenes decisions about trying out new bioplastic materials made of corn that is inexpensive and easily obtainable before any real decisions are made.

Samsung has come out with a new phone. The company corroborates that this telephone, named the F268, does not contain PVC or (PVC) or brominated flame retardants (Flame retardants consisting of organic compounds containing bromine). This phone is a positive step in the company's plan to stop using PVC and BFRs in all of its cell phones by the year 2010.

Greenpeace has credited Samsung with good marks for being a consumer electronics manufacturer that is friendly to the environment. This is based on the recent "Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics", which says that the company has received a rankng of 7 out of 10 since March. placing it among the best. Consistently, it also garnered leading points for its PVC and BFR phase-out timeline. On the other hand while, last November, Samsung began bringing to market PVC-free LCD panels. The Greenpeace ranking system deducted points becaues it did not implement a complete redemption and recycling program.
