Living together of a man and woman and establishing physical relations without marriage is considered immoral and sinful in most traditional societies of the world. Marriage is thus a way for them to get social and religious sanction for living together under one roof and share the same bed for as long as they live. The marital relationship is essential for one’s emotional and psychological nourishment, satisfying physical needs and having and rearing children. Married men and women also have equal share in the family wealth and assets, which gives them a feeling of safety and financial security.

In a marriage, usually the husband earns and takes care of finances while the wife devotes herself fully to doing household work and bringing up children. Women usually desire to have children because having babies gives them a feeling of fulfilment and completeness, while men want to have kids to further their lineage and have heirs to their wealth. Though it is perfectly possible to have children without getting married, it is much better to start a family within the bounds of marriage. This is because marriage ensures a loving and affectionate family atmosphere which is absolutely essential for the healthy mental and physical growth of the kids.
Social Pressure
All the societies down the ages have attached a great importance to marriage and having children, Indeed, these are considered sacred obligations of people that they have to fulfil in their lifetime. This is why people who do not marry well past their marriageable age are considered somewhat abnormal by others. There is a tremendous pressure on individuals to get married from their parents, peers, relatives and the society at large.
Marriage is not only important from an individual’s point of view but is equally crucial for the entire society’s survival and progress. There are many societies today which are greying and dying because their citizens are not interested in getting married, due to their being too career-oriented or conscious of personal freedom.
