In the recent past, Russian families have been liberal during family blessings or weddings. Earlier it was the duty of the young couples to obtain the consent of the parents, but now it is not that way. Those traditions are not the same but there are several other traditions that are to be followed in a Russian marriage.
Russian marriages are a distinct experience. Wherever you meet the Russian bride, be it on the streets or marriage agency, you ought to learn certain basic things about Russian culture and the traditions that are followed by them.
In the olden days of Russia it was quite usual for the bride and groom to be "promised" to each other at a very early age. They would actually spend their wedding getting to know each other. It was the family and the parents who made the decision that they would get married, not the young man or woman.
It wasn't until the 1960's when Americans became what is known as "hippies" that the Russian tradition of promised marriages started changing. Young people were then allowed to date, but any sexual contact was forbidden before the marriage, and they were punished severely if they were found to have had sex.
It was the right of a man to visit the bride's family to know about her prior to marriage. If the father expressed his consent, the woman had to win bread for her future in laws. This proved her ability in being a good and modest wife.
Purchasing a bride was in no way an offense. It is practiced even today. It is however being considered a tradition than an act of trade. Bidding on a woman is done by the man. He offers as much as money and presents that he can to her family. Practices such as this were just done to show that the man will be able to support the woman. A good life after the marriage and no greed was the bottom line of this act.
If the family of the bride did not approve of the marriage, it only meant that the man had to be more challenging. Stealing was a tradition which was a solution to this. It may sound pretty weird but in those days it was a profession. Different types of plans were worked out to get the girl.
Men were paid by the groom, his family, and his friends. This would also never happen without the active support of the bride. Then in the middle of the night she would elope with the man whom she loved. This just proves that Russian women are rebels by nature and are ready to leave everything behind, even their mothers and fathers, when it comes to love and passion.
Signing of the papers was to be done along with taking vows according to the tradition of Russian marriages. The vows had to be taken in front of the almighty. This was done to show that they did care for their religion and also wanted to prove that they did not get married just for legal purposes.
Half an hour was required for the ceremonies if they were done in the orthodox way. They possibly went on for about four hours if it included chants and traditional acts. The modern couples do prefer the short ceremonies instead of the long ones. Once the ceremony is done, the whole lot of people make a move to a family house or a restaurant and indulge in happiness, drinking and delicious meals.
