More and more people are looking for something unique be it a designer sofa or designer jewelry. When it comes to vacations most of us are happy to spend time relaxing on the beach but, if you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary then a visit to the Outer Hebrides of Scotland could be just the ticket. The Isle of Lewis is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region and for good reason.

The Isle of Lewis is the most northerly island in an archipelago known as the Western Isles, or Outer Hebrides, which can be found not too far off the west coast of Scotland in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Being located in the North Atlantic Ocean the coast of Lewis is, at times, dramatic especially up towards the north west where the coastline is rocky.

In sharp contrast the south western coast of Lewis is much more gentle and features a number of noteworthy shell sand beaches that rival the best in the United Kingdom. While most agree this is the better looking part of the island the inland ground, which is mainly flat peat bog, is often quoted as being barren and even boring. However this ground is unique and offers the perfect habitat for a number of extremely interest breeds of birds and other creatures.

As well as the dramatic coastline of the northwest and the silvery beaches of the southwest the Isle of Lewis is extremely well known for it's immensely important historical sites. One of the most famous, and most important sites, are the standing stones found at Calanais. Forming the shape of a crucifix the main stones (site 1) are amongst the most important in Europe. Dotted around the vicinity are an enormous number of lesser stone circles and solitary standing stones. If you get the chance Calanais is one of the island's "must see" attractions.

You can either travel to the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles by air or by ferry. Flying to Stornoway Airport, on the Isle of Lewis, is the most convenient mode of transport as the drive to the three ferry ports (Oban, Ullapool or Uig on Skye) is rather a long one through mainly country roads which can get rather congested at the height of the season.

If you plan to visit Lewis it is important that you understand that the area is deeply religious. The form of Christianity practiced follows a strict observance of a Sunday Sabbath. This aspect of the faith has led to virtually everywhere being closed on a Sunday. It is only in recent years that some of the restrictions on travel have been lifted slightly with only limited travel being available.

While staying on the Isle of Lewis it is important that you respect the Sunday Sabbath and take great care not to upset the local inhabitants. Even hanging out your washing on a Sunday can, in some areas, be considered offensive. However you will find that the islands take on a most serene atmosphere and the sounds of the Gaelic psalms can be heard coming from the many churches up to three times during the day.

The atmosphere of the Outer Hebrides is extremely calming and, if this is your first visit to the Isle of Lewis, you will be surprised at how quickly you become relaxed. As you are never too far from the sea and the air is incredibly clean it will be almost intoxicating. The Hebridean folk are incredibly friendly and the islands are well known for their excellent hospitality and you will, more than likely, be making plans for you next visit before you set off back home.
