Packing Your Backpack For A Vacation Abroad | Vacations

Nothing beats heading out on the road for a bit of backpacking. Ah, freedom! Alas, most people put a crimp in their trip when they start packing for it. Simply put, what should go and what should stay?

When backpacking, the most important thing is what? The backpack! You need a pack that is designed for the specific trip you are taking. Get the wrong pack and you can end up with aches and pains.

You must evaluate your backpack in relation to your trip. A Himalaya expert pack is good if you going to be doing some serious mountaineering. If you are going to be puttering around Europe, it is a bit stiff and will kill your back.

In general, going with the cheapest option is a really bad choice when it comes to backpacks. The issue to keep in mind is support. A backpack that doesn't provide it or leans to one side or another is a bad pack.

Okay, we're ready to pack. At this point, you are probably expecting a list of what to take. Ah, no. Instead, we are going to focus on things you should not take. Why? Because everyone always takes too much stuff.

The internet is a beautiful and addictive thing. That being said, leave your laptop at home. Cyber cafes are almost as common as bars these days. You can access the web from anywhere and save yourself the pain of caring a laptop.

While your destination may be exotic to you, it is vital to remember that the same basic things are available in much of the world. If you can purchase a product in your home town, you can probably get it at your destination.

Remember the golden rule when it comes to clothing. If you can't roll it up, leave it. If your trip takes you across cold areas, you can always dress in layers to stay warm. Space hogging things like sweaters are forbidden.

With this in mind, it is unnecessary to pack multiple bars of soap, tubes of toothpaste and so on. You can buy books, clothes and just about anything around the world. I once found an English book store in the middle of Siberia for example.

Sometimes, you just have to load up on clothing. How unfortunate. Still, this doesn't mean you have to carry it all for the entire trip. If you get done with certain pieces, mail them home. It beats carrying them!

Finally, try on your backpack when you finish packing. Heavy, isn't it? Now take it off and reconsider if you really need all that stuff. Surely there are items you can do without lugging across Europe, Asia or wherever.
