For over half a century tourists have been visiting the shores of Costa del Sol. It has a rich history that dates back to the era of Neanderthal Man and as such has many interesting and ancient sights to see. Its natural beauty and relaxing atmosphere are other attractions that keeps tourists flocking back to visit.

Archaeological findings have been discovered throughout the area, but particularly in the areas surrounding the mouths of the rivers found in Axarquia and in the caves that are found around Malaga. Costa del Sol has been inhabited by a number of different people and they have all left their own mark on the area. There is a large presence of Roman structures, both which they built and which they romanized from those who came before them. These structures include bath houses, aqueducts and temples among other attractions. It is worth visiting many of these ruins. The Moors ruled the area including Costa del Sol for seven centuries. It then changed hands to Christian rule when the Christians took over the area and expelled the Moors.

The modern history of Costa del Sol began in the 1950s. At this time, it was still a rural community that was based on farming and fishing. However, wealthy people began to visit Costa del Sol for its natural beauty, as well as its mild and stable climate. The combination of stunning sandy beaches and mountain terrain that can be found in Costa del Sol are attraction enough for many visitors to the area. In the 1960s, Malaga was made more accessible to other European cities, by the opening of an airport. This only served to increase the tourism to the area.

Costa del Sol is continually adapting to its evolving tourism industry. In 2003 it hosted 8.6 million visitors and these numbers appear to be only increasing with time. Its hotel capacity can hold 70,000 guests and there are approximately 300 hotels in the area. You can choose to stay in hotel that ranges from one to five stars and that can be found in any region of Costa del Sol. Primarily, visitors to the area will have to decide if they are looking for a beach holiday or to be based in the center of the vibrant city. Both options are available when considering Costa del Sol.

Besides for hotels, tourists to the area can choose to stay in a rural getaway in the Andalusian countryside. This will allow for some relaxation and quiet-time. They can decide to stay in a spa resort which is a popular choice for those who are looking for a bit of pampering. Resort apartments are available all along the coastline and beachside apartments can be found in exclusive private developments. Staying in an apartment in Costa del Sol is an excellent choice for those who travel in a group or as a family. They allow for some more privacy, space and freedom than what you could expect if you were staying in a hotel.
