Bowling Lanes Maintenance, Cleaning and Parts | Bowling

Bowling requires a couple of parts as well as equipment in order to be played. Like most sports, bowling both requires a place for you to play and some equipment to play it with. After all, tennis has its court and ball and racquet, American football have their turf and pigskin.

While you might be right about most of it, there is actually more to the bowling lane than that.

The bowling lane is not just a long strip of board where you roll the bowling ball to the pins. It is actually divided into several parts that make up important aspects of bowling. It is the place where you will know if your shot is good or bad, or if you how your shot will go, even.

The planes are, for all purposes, smooth. Those who construct them make sure to smoothen each wooden board before and after they connect them together. Once that's done, they apply some smoothing chemicals on the joined boards, after which they use some polishing techniques to give it that extra shine.

The lane is generally kept smooth and flat. During construction, each wooden board is manually smoothened before they're connected together, and then smoothened again after. Once they're joined, they're applied with another smoothing chemical and then polished to give that flat, almost frictionless feel.

The playing lane is also separated into two parts: the painted area, and the ball rolling area. The painted area is the area within 15 feet beyond the foul line. This area contains painted arrows, which indicate measurements on the lane. These painted arrows are also smoothed by floor polishing. Players drop the bowling balls in this area during each shot.

Generally, the bowling is composed of two parts called the approach area and the playing lane. The approach area is the 15-foot area from where the lane starts to the foul line. Players use this area to drop the ball when they make a shot.

The playing lane, on the other hand, starts where the approach area ends and the two are separated by a foul line. From the foul line to the pins, the distance is 60 feet. If players step on or over the foul line when they take a shot, the shot is considered a foul and is invalid.

The playing lane is further separated into two parts: the painted area and the ball rolling area. The painted area covers the area that is 15 feet beyond the foul line. Painted arrows mark this area indicating lane measurements. Like the lanes, these arrows are also smoothed and polished.

Maintenance includes daily polishing of the lane with smoothing chemicals and soft brooms, as well as polishing materials and dry wiping cloths. Only trained cleaning personnel are allowed to clean the bowling lane and they have to use special shoes to avoid damaging the flooring.

With all these to be considered, does anyone still think a bowling lane is just a lane?
