A photo is worth a thousand dollars. This is derived from the age old saying the a picture is worth a thousand words. Though some pictures are worth a thousand dollars, they surface once in a blue moon. But photos are really worth a few dollars depending on their appeal and quality. All one has to do is to locate a location to sell them and also the right people who want them.
As a photographer, over the years, a fair amount of photos should have accumulated. Some may be good, some may be bad; but they are there and are a potential source of income. There are photos sometimes worth a few thousand dollars, but most of them are worth at least a few dollars. Provided one can find the right person to sell them to and the right medium to sell them through. A little time and effort one your part could put in a few dollars into your purse.
Just about anyone with a collection of photos can successfully market them online. Your background does not matter, neither does your age or age or physical prowess. Professionalism is not required. No one starts at the top. Dedication and toil gets them up there.
Broadly speaking there are about three ways of selling photographs: "Stock Photos", "Products" and "Services".
"Products" and "Services" are indirect ways of marketing photos online. Prints, postcards etc. come under the category of "Products" and Consultancy Services, where expertise is offered constitutes "Services"
The distinction is that the photos are converted into "Products" like post cards, prints etc. and put up for sale on online and offline galleries, gift shops etc., whereas, in 'Services" one acts as a Specialist offering expert advice. As mentioned earlier, "Stock Photos" is the best way to put up your photos for sale. The photos are in your charge, that is to say, they are there in stock ready to be sold. Now these photos can be sold online by two distinct methods. One is to make the buyer come and get them by displaying them online or by sending them to potential purchasers. Both of them are equally good with the exception that the second approach requires more involvement than the first.
Getting the buyer to do the initial approach can be done either giving your photos to stock agencies or microstock sites or by putting them on your own web site. Stock agencies hosts your photos and looks after all the other infrastructural activities such as taking orders, filling them, billing etc. Payment is made on the sales effected and the agency keeps a commission on the deal. Microstock sites operate in a similar way. Putting them on your own web site is a bit more complicated. Either the web site is built from scratch or the services of a photo storefront is employed..
Going to the buyer requires to send samples of your photos to publishers of post cards, magazines, books etc. and directly selling them. In this method more active participation is required on your part. The customers have to be found, as many as possible and photos submitted for appraisal. The best photos have to be produced. The more contacts the better are your chances of getting your pictures sold. There you are. Submit your photos to a stock agency, sit back and wait patiently for your photos to bring in some income or aggressively market your goods. The choice is yours. Go ahead sell photos online.
