Most dog owners want their dogs to be very obedient to their commands and this is why we are conducting a detailed review on the dog training techniques presented in the program, SitStayFetch. They claim by using the methods presented in the program that it will stop your dog's behavior problems.
I will be evaluating how well their tips work by testing them on my German Shepherd dog, Bear. Bear is the perfect candidate to test their techniques on because he currently has no training and he is a young pup, around 8 months old. I will start off teaching him the 'come' command because this is his biggest problem right now.
My dog bear loves to play tag with the dog next door. This by itself is not a problem, but it becomes a problem when he plays tag running along the fence inside my garden. So, in order to save my garden, I try and call him to come inside by saying, 'Bear. . . come.. .' but he does not listen to me. He only glances at me long enough to acknowledge I said something and then goes on his merry way doing what he pleases.
In frustration from my dog ignoring me, I raise my voice and repeat the come command. Bear will then not pay any attention to anything I say, and will keep running up and down the fence without even looking at me. I then become very annoyed and go grab Bear by the collar and drag him into the house, all the while letting him know how I feel. So I read up on what SitStayFetch teaches about the come command and found out I was going about it all wrong. You see, dogs think differently than humans. Not only does SitStayFetch teach you how to teach your dog a command, they also explain why the command works.
So what lesson does SitStayFetch teach us, to make our dogs more obedient? They instructs us that when we do discipline our dog for not listening, they are not learning what we want them to do, but rather what we don't want them to learn. What we see as 'urg, dumb dog you need to listen to me', the dog will see it as I get in trouble when I hear the command 'come' so, I better not go. When we get angry at our dogs and start yelling at them while trying to train them with a command, this will cause them to think that the command we are teaching them means bad things and they will begin to ignore it. Thus, our dog ignores us, we get mad, and the vicious cycle continues. So, this program tells us that instead of getting angry, we need to teach our dogs that the come command means good things.
To teach our dog the command 'Come', we need to make it as positive as possible so our dog learns that the command means good stuff and not bad things like before. To do this, SitStayFetch has several tips, but since this is a review article, I'll keep it to the 3 most important tips.
One: Have some great treats in hand. Some good treats they mention are dog treats, cheese and hot dogs. I use Cheetos and hot dogs, but not dog treats since Bear does not care for them, go figure.
Two: Make sure you speak to your dog with a cheerful voice when you say the command.
Three: Use a long leash so you can reel him in when saying come.
So with my new tips in hand I put Bear on my 15 foot leash and let him go outside. The results. . .
At first Bear did not listen because I had initially taught him that the command come meant that he was in trouble. So, I gave Bear the come command by saying 'Bear. . . come. . .' showed him the cheetos, reeled him into me while saying in a cheerful voice, 'Good Boy Bear. . . Good Come', and then gave him his reward of a couple of cheetos. That peeked his interest and got his tail wagging. I then let him go out and play once again and then called him using the come command. This time something wonderful happened, Bear came anxiously awaiting his great reward. I can not believe how easy it was to teach him this command once I practiced what SitStayFetch tells us to do.
Does the dog obedience training tips that SitStayFetch teach really work to train your dog? The results I have seen in just 1 day of implementing the tips to teach Bear the come command are proof to me that yes they do work. SitStayFetch helped me accomplish in 1 day what I had been trying to teach Bear for months. It is so nice to have a dog that actually listens to your commands. Just apply the techniques that SitStayFetch teaches you, and your dog will be obedient in no time at all.
