Personal development plans are certainly very popular today and can be put together to help you with everything from career improvement to weight loss to public speaking.

You can use many different methods and a variety of tools to achieve your desired personal development outcome and they come at prices to suit all pockets from expensive seminars to cheap books and ebooks. But, in reality, you don't have to spend very much, if anything, to put together a flexible and useable plan to help you achieve your goals. Here are a few steps you can take:

1) Identify the Cause A good starting point with personal development is to look at how you got to where you are right now. For example, if your area of personal development relates to weight loss then look at what lifestyle factors contributed to your weight problem to start with. Write down everything you can think of that contributed to the problem and then analyze how you can modify each factor to get the result you desire.

2) Goal Setting You must have a clear goal in mind if your are to achieve any kind of personal development. You must be totally honest with yourself when it comes to determining exactly what you want to achieve. It will be very difficult to successfully attain something you are not very clear about.

3) Make a Plan Having decided on your goal you must then formulate a plan of action that lists the steps you'll take to attain your goal. Make this plan as detailed as possible and full of little steps that will be individually easy to carry out but which cumulatively will allow you to reach your personal development goal.

4) Focus and Commitment Now you've decided on your goal and made a plan as to how you're going to achieve it you must promise yourself that you will stay focussed and committed until your goal comes to fruition. Working on your plan daily is the best policy and you should ensure that you do not allow distractions to deflect you from this purpose. Daily practice will be habit-forming, and once it becomes habit it will become easier.

5) Look for Inspiration Attempt to find a role model you can copy. If you can find a role model in person who has achieved what you are trying to achieve then you can get inspiration from books, tapes, DVDs or even seminars.

You will get the best overall results if you make continuous personal development a part of your life.

Whichever area of your life you have decided you need to improve, if you diligently apply the steps listed above you will gain the confidence that will give you the belief that you can achieve anything you want to achieve.
