Any kind of instrument which produces a sound, is known as a musical instrument. There are many different instruments producing all kinds of sounds. Some instruments can even be dated all the way back to the origins of music.

Each individual music instrument has its own qualities. These qualities pertain to pitch, melody, range, chords, and so on. The instrument is also placed into a special category based on these qualities.

Wind instruments produce sound through a column of air. Depending on the air column's length, the sound may vary drastically. The construction of the instrument also plays an important role in the music.

Wind instruments are sub-categorized into woodwinds and brass. Typical wind instruments would include that of the bassoon, horn, flute, oboes, and clarinets.

Percussion instruments are those that produce sound upon striking something. The shape, material, resonating cavity or the part struck defines the type of sound produced. Some percussion musical instruments include the snare drum, cymbals, bells, xylophone, timpani and gong chime, timpani.

String instruments are another common category of musical instruments. They produce their sound by vibration on a string, much like that of an earthquake mechanism. The tone also depends on the cavity and body size of the instrument.

The guitar, banjo, and lute are also included in the string instrument category. So as you can see, there are many options for you to choose from if you so wish to play a stringed instrument.

Another category is keyboard instruments that produce music using musical keyboard. All the keys produce different sounds furthermore most of the keyboards instruments have extra features that allows manipulation of these sounds. These instruments can produce sound by wind, strings vibration, electronic means and many other ways.

Keyboards are known as electronic instruments because the sound they produce is done electronically. So as you can see, this is why they fit into the electronic category.

Typically brass instruments will include that of horn, trumpet, trombone, and tuba. These instruments are used in orchestras and their sound is produced when the player blows air into the chamber.

All musical instruments are categorized by their sound and make. While some of these are suitable for newbies to learn music on, the best instruments to start with are the piano and guitar.
