You can't really be serious about getting massive free traffic from the search engines if you do NOT appear on the first page of search results. And how do you rank high for your chosen keywords?

There are many things you have to do like ensuring you have the right density of keywords on your page, having your keywords in your meta description tag, title, images and so on. However, of all known steps to high ranking, building your link popularity is the most important. Here are tops ways to get high quality links...

1. Piggy-back on sites that have built a reputation by submitting your articles to article directories. This is a very effective link-building method. Furthermore, you can do it without spending a dime.

Why I personally use article marketing as my preferred way of building links is that I have total control on how the links to my site are formatted. With this level of control, I can decide and affect which key phrases I rank for.

Don't just submit one article to one directory and think you're done. Keep submitting articles at least once a week to as many article sites as you can find.

Bear in mind that you need to ensure you use the right tools and strategy if you want to get the most from this. For example, you need to ensure that each instance of your article on each article directory is unique. There are tools and services that take care of this and your article submissions.

2. Start blogging on similar themes to your main website niche. All you'll then do is link to your site each time you make a post.

Lack of money is certainly NOT an excuse to postpone starting your own blog. You only need to have what you want to say. Just make sure it's some useful and relevant to your theme. You can start within a few minutes for free at either blogger.com or wordpress.com.

Do you have to start a blog to build links with them? No. You can easily build many high quality links if you make useful comments on other people's blog. Just make sure they "do follow" and that you link back to your site.

3. Unless you've been in another planet, you must have heard of sites like del.icio.us and digg.com. They are social bookmarking sites. When you bookmark your articles on these sites you get a link back to your site.

What happens when others see your pages on their bookmarks and visit? They might also add you to their bookmarks if they like what they read. These will go a long way in getting you high quality links from these highly respected sites.

4. Submit your site to web directories. Some will review your site for free and include you if you meet their standards. Others will charge a fee.

Dmoz is certainly one of the most important directories. However, it does take such a long time for your site to be included. But while you're advised to submit your site for review there, don't stop there.

Do NOT limit yourself to just the big directories. Search in your niche. Although niche directories might NOT have very high page rank, their links are very useful because they are theme-focused.

If it looks like a daunting task to submit your site to many directories, then check some software or submission services.

5. Search for forums in your niche. Visit them and post useful comments (of course with a link to your site). Make sure you add value to these forums and you'll get the most out of this strategy.

There are a few other ways to get quality links. But you can be sure of one thing: You'll soon start seeing massive traffic to your site if you commit to the methods discussed in this article.
