Most people using the internet have, in some way, been to exposed to blogs, either through personal interests or company-related issues. The term "blog" is a combination of the words "web" and "log" and refers to an online journal that helps people communicate quickly, and usually on a daily basis with an unlimited number of readers. Often they are created with the intent of simply sharing personal news with family members or friends.
The question for business owners is "How can I use this to further my business?". Use blogs to inform customers and prospects about your industry, and more specifically about exciting new events in your company. In other words, it is easier to update a blog regularly than to construct new web pages every time you have news to share.
The best feature of blogging for your business is the fast-paced nature of the scene. Updates about your company can reach your clients, prospects and employees instantly. You can also include links directly to your website from blogs, enticing people to buy your goods and services.
Permitting other ads to be placed on your page can also provide you with a little extra cash flow. This trend, called affiliate marketing, is a way to connect your business with other related companies. You sign up for this service with a company and they take care of choosing which ads will be associated with your blog. The money you earn comes from each individual hit on those ads.
The money made from pay-per-clicks is sometimes simply used to pay for one's own ads to be placed on other blogs. The service you hire will be responsible for picking the blogs. You simply plug information into a predetermined template in most cases.
It is important to note, however, that blogs no longer rank high in search engine listings. After people caught on that they could write endlessly about practically nothing, inserting a keyword here and there to get a higher search engine placement, search results would produce a dozen blogs before any other types of websites. The search engines then downgraded the listing of blogs in the results.
Another danger in blogging for business is the tendency to write as one would speak. This can lead to a very unprofessional looking blog, which can turn customers off in an instant. Blog readers also have come to expect new content often, which means you may end up devoting more time than you had originally planned to writing updates.
A fully maximized online marketing strategy will make use of blogs in a careful and professional way. Customers can be updated and employees can be informed of news. As long as you are realistic in your expectations of this endeavor, blogging can be an ongoing tool in your marketing arsenal.
