The heart of the business world has revolved around business cards for decades. But only recently have technological advances changed the face of business cards as we knew them only a few decades ago. If businesses are going to maintain a healthy client base, such advances should be taken advantage of.

The best way to attract attention to a business card is to make it exciting. And with only a few colors, the level of excitement of business cards from decades ago were far from innovative or creative. But thanks to advances in printing, it is now possible to obtain real-color images on business cards with very inexpensive prices to boot- something that should always be taken advantage of.

Although it isn't necessarily new, the prospect of using raised lettering on business cards has always brought a sense of texture and appeal to business cards in general. The process involved a technique called thermography, which typically used heat in order to give the raised appearance. This is often an inexpensive option as well.

Golden and glossed effects have also been shown to give business cards a bit of pizazz that would otherwise not be present. These flashy effects are often more expensive on average, but the extra attention can lead to better chances in making business contacts, repeat customers, or even new clients. Thus, the extra cost is often worth it in the long run.

Other business card fanatics are now resorting to distorting the common rectangle shape of business cards. Adding grooves, inset bevels, or even making entirely different shapes with business cards always warrants extra attention from the recipient. Although this is a nice touch, it is often unnecessary and will always cost more on average than the normal business card most are accustomed to.

Sometimes it isn't always about sticking with paper based business cards- sometimes it is better to shatter the mold and instead opt for different business card materials that are a bit more exotic. Using wood, cloth, magnets, and metal have proven to be better at grabbing one's attention- but also will cost more money as well. In the end, it comes down to how flashy the business card should be and what one can afford.

Sometimes it is about breaking the established norms that society has deemed casual. Some business cards have begun to take advantage of technology, and instead circulate the name of a business through tools such as CDs or even wirelessly through digital signals. These are less used, however, and are still considered unconventional by today's standards.

Overall, the business card world hasn't changed much since its inception. Newer technologies are seeking to change that, however, and it might not be long before all the print and ink business cards are a thing of the past. But until that happens, always consider the extra design effects that come from shaping, coloring, and even deforming business cards as we know them in order to receive extra attention from potential customers. After all, the extra attention can go a long way in the world of business.
