Solar Power Houses | Home

Solar power and other forms of renewable energy are gaining popularity for a couple of reasons. The first is that traditional ways to heat and light your home are getting more expensive. People are feeling this cost in their wallets and it is motivating them to look for alternatives. Solar power kits and other types of renewable energy systems offer this alternative.

The second reason is the environment. People are becoming more concerned about what we are doing to the environment and the legacy that we leave for our children. A renewable energy resource is self renewing. It will not run dry or run out the more you use. It will not run out if more people use it.

In fact, you could accurately say that by not taking advantage of Sun and wind power, we are wasting these free energy resources. And by building systems that take advantage of these resources we do less damage to the environment than burning fossil fuels.

Solar power kits are mainly concerned with providing heat and electricity for the home.

You need physical warmth to keep the home warm and habitable. You need heat for water to take a shower or bath. And you need electricity to power many things in your home. You may cook using electricity, you may warm the house using electricity. You almost certainly provide light to the home using electricity.

Solar power kits that make hot water generally use the passive approach of making it easier for the Sun to heat water. The solar kit is hooked up to the plumbing system of the home so that the hot water can be used in the home. However, the more well known solar kit is one that uses solar panels.

A solar panel is a series of photo voltaic cells (PV). A PV cell is made of a compound of silicon. This reacts with the photons in Sunlight to displace an electron. When a number of PV cells are lined up, in a solar panel, a current flows. This current is direct current (DC).

DC can be stored or directly used on some appliances. However, if it is converted to alternating current then it can power many of the household appliances that we use every day, like the fridge, cooker, TV, radio and lights.

Many people can set up a solar power system or a combination of systems but are always reliant on the Sun. This is one of the drawbacks of solar power and is another reason why it is always recommended to have a contingency plan should the Sun not shine or the day is cloudy. Most people have the utility company as their contingency plan but if you really want to take renewable energy to heart you should think about wind power.

Developing a wind generator is easy to do in the suburban home as the natural resource, the wind, is likely to be there to some extent. If you install a solar powered system and a wind generator in your home then you have an energy generating solution come rain, wind or shine (so to speak).

Having said this, it makes sense when you are new to renewable energy systems to always have the grid as a back up. Once you become more comfortable with renewable energy or know that the systems can provide all your energy needs then you can think about going off grid. Although, some people choose to stay on the grid and sell the electricity that they make back to the utility company.
