When designing a landscape, designers consider texture, light and shade, color, and placement of a variety of plants. Plush fruit trees provide instant shade and some color. A rustic stone path may provide contrast and texture when set against green ground cover. Flowers are known for their plethora of color in the garden. Shrubs, which come in a variety of shapes and colors, can create variety, texture, and shape in any landscape.

The Burning Bush is a well-known and admired centerpiece shrub that floods the landscape with a spectacular display of red during the fall months. The large round bush is at home in just about any landscape.

When winter months create a dreary outdoor scene, a China Holly can always be counted on for cheer and color. Touting bright red berries and evergreen foliage, the China Holly is a classic winter favorite.

Choosing multi-season shrubs will ensure year-round color in your landscape. A Purple Sand Cherry offers bright flowers in May, red cherry berries in the fall and purple foliage until the winter months.

Shrubs are Practical Landscape Additions

Shrubs are hard-working plants that earn their place in the landscape. Small ornamental shrubs can be used to create interesting borders along flower beds or walkways, or for intricate garden design. Looking for some privacy in your yard? Tall, fast-growing evergreen shrubs make excellent privacy curtains and good organic fences. Shrubs can be used to shelter delicate plants from wind and snow, or break up large patches of grass lawn.

Topiaries introduce bushes in their highest art form. Bushes can be clipped and shaped into just about any shape, but the most popular shapes seem to be animals and geometric shapes. Topiaries are wonderful lawn conversation pieces.

Most shrubs continue to provide color and texture year after year, but require very little care and maintenance. They are delicate enough to be beautiful and graceful, but strong enough to withstand the elements in most cases.

Travelers and vacationers who spend time away from home especially appreciate high-color, but low-maintenance shrubs. Two stunningly beautiful, easy-care bushes are the classic Bougainvillea with bright red leaves, and the Mentor Barberry.

Plant Shrubs in the Right Place

Once you consider where you want to plant shrubs, you'll have no problem finding a shrub that is the right size and shape for your area. The Smooth Hydrangea grows three to five feet tall, and the Chinese Juniper can stretch up to eight feet. Shorter shrubs include the Cranberry Cotoneaster and the Dwarf Honeysuckle, which grow to about three feet. Some shrubs are bushier, while others are more contained and vertical. Shrubs can be trimmed and clipped to just about any shape and size that will accommodate your landscaping needs.

Landscaping options are unlimited and many plants besides shrubs can play a part in the big picture. For an example, vines against a wall or fence make an excellent backdrop for colorful flowers. Use your imagination and have fun with your landscaping.
