If you have a woodworking shop, chances are you have hardwood lumber. If you don't, you should because anytime you're making a product you want good quality lumber and hardwood is not only good quality but beautiful as well. There are different lumber types, each of them dependent on what you are building.

If you go to your local lumber suppliers, they will give you a list of each of the different types of lumber and which is best for what. Walnut is popular because of their dark and rich tones. Walnut is also a very strong wood that is durable. The tight grain of walnut gives it an appeal all its own. Walnut is used for cabinets, furniture, musical instruments as well as excellent veneers. Walnut is often the lumber of choice for grandfather clocks.

Another very popular hardwood is oak. Oak is a more expensive type of hardwood, but is used in many homes for hardwood flooring, furniture and cabinets. It is most popular in the making of kitchen cabinets. In spite of the price, it is the most sought after wood for its soft beautiful tones.

Yellow poplar is less expensive than both walnut and oak, but is still a very good quality wood. It comes from one of the tallest hardwood trees in the eastern United States. It's used in a variety of products such as musical instruments, sporting goods, furniture and toys. Poplar is also popular because it's one of the easiest to work with in your home or commercial shop.

Beech is a popular and well-known lumber that is grown in the United States as well as other countries. In addition to flooring and furniture, it is also used for baskets, boxes and small projects. It is very easy to stain or paint, which makes it popular in the home for small woodworking projects.

Many couples that want the look of hardwood but can't afford the price choose to go with hardwood plywood. For extra strength and durability, hardwood veneer is attached to particleboard with glue. This is often used for bookcases and dressers, with oak plywood being one of the best quality and most often used. Windsor plywood is also an excellent choice. Many home products today are built with hardwood plywood. It gives couples and families the chance to have beautiful furniture without the high cost.

Lumber can be purchased at any lumberyard as well as home improvement centers. Some of these stores will let you pick through the lumber to get the boards you want. Some of the more expensive lumbers like walnut may not be available at lumber stores but can be found in some home improvement stores. During certain times of the year, many of these lumbers are on sale.
