Knitters Are No Longer An Elderly Hobby | Hobbies

For those who have always wanted to try knitting, but just didn't think that it was a cool enough hobby; now is the time. It has made a strong comeback and more and more knitters and knitting clubs are emerging. Knitting, and even crocheting, are no longer just hobbies that grandmothers pursue; today more and more younger people are taking up the craft and loving it. Whether the individual is looking for a relaxing outlet for their creativity or they want to learn to make presents for their loved ones, this activity seems to be the way to go.

One thing that seems to be influencing the resurgence of yarn crafts, including crocheting and knitting, is the incredible variety of yarns available. Gone are the days of plain pastel yarn, limited in content and brand. Today, wool yarns can be found in a variety of weights and sizes, including super chunky, as well as with built-in color schemes, where one skein has several coordinating or contrasting colors.

Cotton yarn, too, comes in multi-color skeins and various textures, including chenille. Among the most popular yarns, though, are the novelty yarns that are fuzzy, nubbly and even glittery.

Lion Brand Yarn, for example, makes suede, ruffle, boucle and fur yarns. Some of the new novelty yarns require knitters to know special knitting techniques beyond the basic stitches, but the results produced are well worth the effort.

To go with the new styles and colors of yarn is an entirely new world of knitting patterns. Patterns for bags, cell phone cases and crop tops appear in knitting books, while magazines even carry patterns for projects like exotic, knitted lingerie.

Knitters are able to go beyond the traditional knitted items found in department stores, creating knits that fit with their own unique personality and sense of style. New patterns are usually easily adapted to create entirely new pieces, and some patterns even come with instructions for changing parts of the knitted piece.

More creative crafters have even begun creating accessories and altering store-bought items, such as sleeves for denim jackets or adding knitted hems and insets to tops. In addition, popular magazines, like Teen and InStyle, have begun carrying such patterns, making modern knitted fashions and accessories even more accessible.

There are some knitters who prefer to still use knitting needles and are against using items like the knitting machine. They plan to keep the hobby as it once was and shy away from the modern ways of knitting.

Those who are just picking up the hobby are naturally more likely to knit the more modern items. Whether you are an old pro or totally new to the craft, knitting can be a very enjoyable activity and possibly one that can be enjoyed together by both young and old individuals, despite what they are knitting.
