28. Make Your Own Scrapbook Albums? Yes, You Can!
Seasoned scrapbookers know that scrapbooking is an expensive hobby. In addition to costly tools, embellishments, and paper, there are expensive albums into which you insert your family's memories for safekeeping. Sometimes, we want to make event scrapbooks to share as gifts with family, friends, and coworkers, but the cost of these albums can be prohibitive. Fortunately, there is an alternative to traditional scrapbook albums that you purchase in the craft store. You can make your own album with your choice of acid free paper using spiral coil binding. You can buy spiral coil in a variety of lengths and colors. No matter what the theme of your scrapbook, you can definitely find a coordinating color of coil since it is manufactured in over sixty colors. Some of the newer colors include spiral blue, dark purple, copper, tangerine, lilac, light teal, and charcoal. In addition to spiral coil's color options, you can also customize your scrapbook's size through coil size selection. No longer must you choose standard sizes selected for you by the craft industry. You can choose to create books ranging in widths from a quarter of an inch up to two inches. Instead of settling for standard six, eight, eleven, or twelve inch lengths, you can go all the way up to three feet with spiral coil. Taking control of your binding allows you to experiment with different sizes and configurations so that you can create unique scrapbooks that are just perfect for the memories contained inside them. You may think this type of binding equipment is expensive and is not a viable option for scrapbookers on a budget. That simply is not true. For crafters who make 8.5" x 11" scrapbooks, the GBC ProClick P50 is available for about $60. Compared to the price for one album, this equipment is a viable option-especially when it can be used to make album upon album. It will pay for itself in just a few projects. If you are not an 8.5" x 11" scrapbooker, you will need to look for a machine that can bind scrapbooks of different lengths. The PC200 machine is more expensive (about $250), but it is much more customizable. This machine allows you to shift into creative overdrive since you can bind memory books ranging in length from one inch up to 21 inches long. In addition to its versatility, it uses plastic coils that are slightly less expensive than those used for the GBC ProClick machine. Not only can spiral coil binding help you create scrapbooks and craft projects for you and your family to enjoy, it can also help you to make money. Think about putting together your own unique scrapbook kits to sell online or in local craft stores. Compared to what you can make-especially by offering products no one else has-the costs associated with binding equipment are minimal. There really is no limit to what sorts of projects you can put together using your imagination and the right equipment.

30. Using Plastic Spiral Coil For Binding Scrapbooks
If you have made very many scrapbooks, you know how costly albums can be to purchase. This cost is all too apparent if you are making scrapbooks that are designed to be given away as gifts or if you are one of those prolific scrapbookers with dozens or even hundreds of scrapbooks. However, there is an alternative to expensive albums when binding your scrapbooks. You can use spiral coil (also called color coil). One of the best things about spiral coil is that it is available in almost any length and color imaginable. Currently, spiral coil is available in more than 64 stock colors. No matter what color scheme that you choose for your scrapbook, there is most likely a color available that will match. Recently a number of new colors of spiral coil were released including: Charcoal, Electric Blue, Magenta, Fluorescent Green, Dark Purple, Fluorescent Pink, Fluorescent Orange, Burnt Orange, Spiral Blue, Plum, Neon Green, Pearl, Goldenrod, Light Teal, Lilac, Process Blue, Copper and Tangerine. Using the different colors available on the market, you can give almost any scrapbook its own customized appearance. Spiral Coil also lends itself extremely well to scrapbooking since you can buy coils in almost any size or length imaginable. Color coil is available in sizes as small as 6mm (1/4") and as large as 50mm (2") however it works best in sizes up to 1" (25mm). Coil can also be ordered in almost any length up to 36" long and can be easily cut to the correct length if needed. This flexibility makes it possible to bind almost any size of scrapbook including 12" x 12", 8" x 8" and 8.5" x 11" albums. Traditionally, the equipment to punch holes for spiral coil binding has been too expensive for the home market. However, there are now a few different coil binding machines that are affordable for doing scrapbooking and creating memory books. For 11" x 8.5" albums, GBC (General Binding Corporation) recently introduced a new binding punch called the ProClick P50. The ProClick P50 costs about $60 and can be used in conjunction with 3:1 pitch spiral coil for an extremely economical coil binding solution. For individuals who are looking to bind scrapbooks with a binding edge shorter or longer than 11" a plastic coil binding machine with disengageable dies is necessary. There are coil binding machines available on the market that cost approximately $250 and have 46 disengageable punch pins allowing you to bind documents as short as 1 inch long and as long as 21 inches long (using the open throat design). These machine uses 4:1 pitch color coil which is more readily available and slightly cheaper than 3:1 pitch coil. Using this type of binding machine you can bind dozens or even hundreds of scrapbooks without difficulty.
31. Create Your Own Custom Photobook or Hard Cover Book
Have you seen those cool PhotoBooks and memory books that are produced by some of the big online photo printing companies? How would you like to be able to produce something like that yourself? Plus you can customize the front to add a full color photograph or title sheet that will really make your books stand out. This is actually something that isn't all that difficult to you. Here is a quick set of instructions for creating your own fully customized hard cover documents. First, you will need some materials. Here is what you will need. * A binding machine capable of binding a hard cover book. * A cold process laminator / sticker maker (such as the Xyron Creative Station) * The printed pages to bind into your book. * A printed page for the cover of your book * A hard cover case to bind the pages in Once you have collected these items, you are ready to create your own photobook, memory book or hard cover presentation. Here are five simple steps to finishing your book. 1. Assemble all of the pages of your book and make sure that they are in the correct order. Take the pages and make sure that they are completely square and flush and add end leaves if that is something that is important to you. 2. Insert the pages for your hardcover into the hard cover case that you purchased (probably a Unibind Steelbook, Unibind Photobook or a thermal binding hard cover). Take the cover with your pages in it and place it in the binding machine. The binding machine will heat up the spine of the book and bind your pages in place. If you are using Unibind you are ready to proceed to the next step. If you are using thermal binding you will need to place your document into a special crimper before it is completed. Let the document cool while you proceed with the next step. 3. Now that your document is bound, you need to create the sticker for the front of your cover. At this point you will take your printed page for the cover of your book and run it through your sticker maker / cold process laminator. You are going to want to make sure that your laminator is equipped with a cartridge that adds permanent adhesive to the back side and it is recommended that you add a laminate to the front side (this will prevent peeling or damage). 4. After you have run the document through the laminator, it will have a peel off liner on the back of it much like a sticker does. You will want to peel this liner off and carefully apply it to the front of your book. It is very important to make sure that the sticker is square on the front of the book since the permanent adhesive will make it nearly impossible to adjust later. 5. Once you have applied the sticker to the front of the book you will need to be sure to smooth out the sticker to ensure that there are no air bubbles underneath. After you have done this your customized hard cover book is completed. For the best results with this type of hard cover binding, I recommend using a glossy white hard cover or trying to match your printed coversheet to the color of your cover. Using this style it is also possible to wrap your printed cover around the spine of the document to add a spine print. You would want to do this after the binding process was complete so that the printing will not be discolored by the heat from the binding system.
32. Computerized Die Cuts Revolutionize Scrapbooking
For years, schools have been using expensive die cutting equipment for bulletin boards and craft projects. Then as scrapbooking became more popular scrapbook shops and craft stores started selling die cuts and cutting equipment. Usually, the cutting equipment isn't that expensive. However, you can easily spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on die sets. For most individuals who love to scrapbook, the cost of owning a traditional die cutting machine along with a large selection of dies is just not practical. With the cost of traditional cutting solutions, most serious scrapbookers were left to either buy cuts or use a cutting machine at local scrapbooking stores. However, that has now all changed. With the advent of computerized cutting solutions, it is now possible for individuals to create their own die cuts in the comfort of their own home without breaking the bank. There are a number of different computerized cutting machines available on the market. However, most of these machines require users to buy font sets and shape sets to use with the machine. Usually the machine itself is not very expensive. However, like traditional cutting solutions it is easy to spend two or three times the value of the machine on the fonts and shapes. Unfortunately, this isn't that much better than the old way of doing die cuts. A few computerized cutting solutions are different. They allow you use your computer to cut any font or shape that you have on your hard drive. With these solutions, there are literally millions of possibilities and you don't need to buy a single font set or cartridge. You can use any of the fonts, clipart or shapes that you currently have on your computer or you can design your own shapes and cut them out. These solutions even come with software that allows you to "weld" words together to make a die cut of a complete word. The possibilities for this type of machine are endless. You can use these machines to cut letters and words from virtually any type of paper you can find. You can cut nearly any shape that you can imagine, including complex shapes with small details such as a snowflake. You can even cut a logo or shape out of a card or document allowing you to create unique layers. Plus, if you run out of ideas of things to cut out you can find endless ideas on the internet. In fact, there are even groups dedicated to sharing ideas and designs to use with these type of die cutting machines. There are currently three different machines on the market that offer the option of cutting shapes and true type fonts from your computer. These options include the Xyron Wishblade, The Craft Robo and the Pazzles Mini. All three of these machines offer similar features at similar prices. Check them out for yourself and start cutting shapes and letters today.
