It seems that every time we pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV we hear reports of how obesity is turning out to be one of the greatest problems to face the western world. Carrying too much extra weight inevitably places an extra strain on our health and so many different ways whether it be from an increased risk of diabetes or a raising of blood pressure.
Drugstore shelves are stacked full of over the counter remedies to magically eliminate those excess pounds as people constantly search for that secret potion that will help them lose weight, reduce their appetite and provide boundless energy. Carb blockers, Hoodia and many others are advertised everywhere with the promise of instant results.
Metabolism is an important part of losing weight and controlling hunger, and calorie burning. Vitamins may be the answer for those who are not interested in taking over-the-counter pills. Over-the-counter creations could cause an increased heart rate, skittishness, and sleeplessness. Your body can become used to the drugs and adapt to them. Sometimes the pills lose their effectiveness and there is no clear proof that they will not damage your heart.
The proper vitamins can aid weight loss and control. Our body will work better when we are healthy and being sure we are getting the proper nutrients plays a huge part of our health. It is hard to pick out the "perfect" vitamins to use for weight control or weight loss. There are a few that are worth mentioning because of their use in controlling appetite, metabolism of fats and sugar, and calorie burning.
The most important vitamins you can take for weight control are the B vitamins and vitamin C. They each have a role for our body and are important in weight control and over-all health.
Vitamin B2, which is the riboflavin vitamin, is essential for normal thyroid function and metabolism. You will find riboflavin in almond, hard cheese, eggs, milk products leafy green vegetables, and organ meats such as liver and kidney.
The B3 vitamin is Niacin. This is important for controlling the thyroid function as well as our glucose toleration. Each time our body's blood sugar rises, we need a supply of vitamin B3. There are many food sources of this important vitamin such as wheat flakes and oats, tuna, turkey, chicken, meat eggs, fish, brown rice and dried fruit.
Important for maintaining our energy levels and for helping with the function of our adrenal gland is vitamin B5, which also aids in the body's use of fat. We find vitamin B5 in wheat germ, wheat bran, and wheat flakes. Also, green vegetables, beans, molasses, eggs, barley and oats provide us with a good source of this essential vitamin.
B6 vitamins are important for the body's metabolism and thyroid function, these vitamins include Inositol and Choline. Choline is particularly important in the metabolism of fat. Choline is found in peanuts, beef organs, wheat germ and egg yolks. Inositol can be found in nuts, eggs, whole grains and citrus fruits whilst good sources of vitamin B6 are dried fruits, fish, eggs, beef and poultry.
Vitamin C provides many health benefits including converting glucose to energy. You can find this important vitamin in lemons, oranges, strawberries, blackcurrants, and vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cabbage.
If, you make sure that you eat, as part of a balanced diet, as many of the foods I have discussed as possible, you will be significantly increasing your body's ability to keep your weight under control. As always, moderation is the keyword and it is far better to eat a variety of these vitamin rich foods rather than to focu on just a few.
Eating a healthy balanced diet is always going to be the best way of getting these important weight controlling vitamins into your body. Our busy lifesyles these days means that this is not always possible and this is where a good quality vitamin supplement can help, although under no circumstances should you just rely on supplements to provide you with your nutritional needs.
