Calcium is the most profuse mineral found in the human body, which means it is one of the most important. It is essential for your bones, muscles, and teeth, not to mention the vital role it plays in other bodily functions. The multi-functional role calcium plays in your body is the reason why it is important to get the calcium your body needs.
Calcium supplements are generally easy to come by and may suffice to help meet your daily minimum requirement. Like with any other supplement it's generally a good idea to know what you're taking and how much before you start taking it. The amount of calcium your body needs is to some extent dependent on age.
Growing bodies require more calcium on a daily basis as do pregnant women. For most adults up through about 50 years in age the daily recommended dosage is 1000 milligrams. You can keep this number in mind when checking the label on multivitamins or calcium supplements.
Calcium supplements pose little health threat, but there are important aspects you should take into consideration before beginning calcium supplements. Some prescription medications do not mix with calcium, so be sure to ask you doctor about calcium supplements and how they might interact with your medications. Calcium may make kidney stones worse. Calcium comes attached to another element, such as carbonate.
Calcium can also combine with harmful metals such as lead or mercury so it pays to check the USP symbol to insure that the calcium in the supplement is free of these elements. Also checking the label will tell you the amount of calcium per serving. In summary, calcium supplements are generally safe and may indeed be what you need but if you have doubts you should check with your doctor to see what he or she recommends.
