6 Steps to Boost Your Immune System | Nutrition

We all know there are necessities, such as eating and drinking, that we need to survive. From the time we are young, we are told that food is energy, exercise makes your body strong and herbs are used only by people who believe in them. But there is more you need to know - that these elements are "tools" used by your body that can give you a strong immune system. Use these 6 simple steps to strengthen your immunity...

  1. Food is more than calories and energy. Nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids are used as building blocks. Every day these nutrients are used to manufacture new, fresh cells, including white blood cells which are also called immunity cells. This is why many nutritionists advocate, "eating a balanced diet," because it is known that you need a variety of nutrients to build new cells. In fact, the saying should include eating mostly fresh, organic vegetables and fruits, since organic produce has been shown to have 40% more nutrients. By eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, you will be sure to give your body the building blocks it will use to build a strong immune system.

  2. While healthy foods give you the building blocks needed to build a strong immune system, junk food will rob your body of these important nutrients, not leaving enough to keep you strong. This is because it takes a lot of nutrients to break down junk food and keep the harmful toxins from them in check. In fact, many of these types of foods contain chemicals that the body doesn't recognize. If your body doesn't know what to do with them, they can be stored in fatty tissue. This may be on a microscopic level, but over time add up. So eat "fun foods" in moderation.

  3. Since many find it difficult to eat their share of fruits and veggies, fresh vegetable and fruit juice may be the way to go. In fact, it is easy to drink 10 carrots and benefit from all the nutrients found in them, but it is almost impossible to eat and digest the same. Fresh veggie juice is best for those on-the-run or who like to keep it simple.

  4. Exercise has been known to strengthen the body and stimulate the immune system. It gets blood flowing and helps your lymphatic system move. This will ensure that your body carries out waste while at the same time transports necessary nutrients to where it's needed. In addition - your breathing will deepen to more efficiently carry out metabolic waste. Try a brisk 20 minute walk at least 4 times a week.

  5. Herbs are being researched more today because of their known effectiveness to help your body. Echinacea has been shown to boost the immune system, garlic helps kill bacteria and other pathogens, and a compound in goldenseal has been shown to work against infections and tumors. These are just a couple examples of how herbs work. As for side effects - there really are none. What is shown is how the body changes by revving metabolism or better assimilation - a side effect you would also find by changing to a healthier diet. One thing to watch for, however, is your body's reaction if you are taking medications.

  6. Cleansing can help your body clear built up waste and stored toxins. This would help boost your immune system by taking away the extra burden of having to battle stored toxins on a daily basis. Your immune system already has a daily bombardment of bacteria, virus and pathogens - no matter how much you wash your hands. So free up your immune system by eliminating internal buildup.

These are just some of the things that you can do to help your body become stronger and boost your immune system. But remember - healthy food and herbs don't heal your body. These are tools to help you make your body stronger so that it can do what it was made to - keep you alive and healthy.
