A panic attack is an unexpected, brief period of extreme anxiety. They can occur without warning and with no obvious cause. It is for this reason that many people who suffer from panic attacks considered them to be extremely frightening and upsetting.
Symptoms of panic attack are numerous but include:
- Increased amounts of sweating
- Shortness of breath
- Increased heart rate
- Terrifying thoughts
- Loud internal dialogue
- Feeling like you are going to die any second

- Feeling of not being connected to ones body
- Extreme anxiety or nervousness
Most panic attack symptoms last for around ten minutes. That can however, last as little 5 minutes. Typically, other psychological disorders are present with panic attacks.
The "fight or flight" phenomenon is responsible for panic attacks. This is your body's way of protecting you from danger by flooding your body's system with adrenaline in preparation for a fight or to flee in response to perceived threat. However, in the case of panic attacks this response occurs without a specific trigger of danger.
Causes of Panic Attack
There are two categories of panic attack causes. The first is psychological, which includes a lack of assertiveness, phobias, a cautious view on the world and a significant life change. The second is pharmacological, with long-term use of drugs such as speed and marijuana becoming a major cause of panic attacks.
Panic attacks can also be symptom of other psychological disorders such as post traumatic stress or anxiety.
Panic Attack Treatment
Panic attacks are usually treated with a combination of psychiatric drugs and a psychological therapy called Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). They can be successfully treated but the required effort on the part of the sufferer is a must.
