Dancing On2 means that the break step synchronizes with the accented slap of the tumbao, the pattern played on the conga drums, while the On1 break step synchronizes with the first beat of the measure. The basic movement occurring in the dance patterns of the various salsa styles is the stepping on the beat of the music. The basic movement common across most salsa styles is to step quick-quick-slow over the 4 beat measure. Some say that the salsa steps and rhythm come from Cha cha cha, Guaracha, Changu, Palo Monte, Rumba. Some disagree.

Cuban Salsa is easier to learn than many other forms of dance. While percussion instruments layer several different rhythmic patterns simultaneously, the clave rhythm is the foundation of salsa. The rhythm structure is based on either the 2/3 or 3/2 son clave, and the sound is one very much associated with Puerto Rican or New Yorican bands, such as El Gran Combo & Tito Puente. Directly or indirectly, all the other instruments and the singers in the band are guided and structured by the clave rhythms.
