Bipolar disorder is all about highs and lows. Sometimes, you feel like you're the king of the world. Other times, you feel like you're the grime on the boots of the king of the world. The way that a bipolar person behaves varies between the disorders various stages.
Bipolar behavior is inconsistent. The are two phases of bipolar disorder that occur for the longest. They are called mania and depression. There is another one called hypomania but it is hardly noticeable as it occurs for a very short time. This is the bipolar state where a person acts the most behaved. In this state, the person thinks very clearly and is relaxed.
During the state of mania, a distinct period of an elevated, expansive or irritable mood state occurs. People commonly experience an increase in energy and a decreased need for sleep. Attention span is low and a person in a manic state may be easily distracted, doing all sorts of activities to while his time and excess of inexhaustible energy.
After this string of manic activity, the person burns out. Afterwards, the state of depression rears its ugly head. Signs and symptoms of the depressive phase of bipolar disorder include loneliness, self-loathing, apathy or indifference and depersonalization.
In the depressed state, the reclusive individual expresses loss of interest in sexual activity, shyness or social anxiety, irritability, anger, isolation and/or hopelessness, disturbances in sleep and appetite, fatigue and loss of interest in usually enjoyed activities; a gray rainbow of depressive emotions.
Once this down state ends, the person goes back to either the hypomanic state or the more dangerous manic state. This self-destructive cycle usually repeats itself until the person couldn't take it anymore, often leading to suicide. This type of disorder should be acknowledged and treated as soon as possible, because without treatment there's only one other way for a bipolar person to escape his see-saw of emotions.
