Plastic surgery is one of the most popular topics talked about today, and there are a few subjects within that topic that are more popular than others. One of those is the facelift. Every year, thousands of men and women go under the knife to erase years from their faces with this technique.
Ever since the facelift was invented in the early 20th century by surgeon Eugene Hollister, people have been wanting to have this procedure to change the way that they look and erase years off of their faces. The popularity of the facelift keeps growing, along with that of breast augmentation and liposuction.
Most of the facelifts that are performed today are done on women who are trying to look their best and youngest, but don't discount those men - they too are going under the knife to look younger. Today, that knife can even mean endoscopy, using smaller cuts than a standard facelift.
A standard incision facelift, which is not as widely performed today, requires a large cut all the way along the hairline so that the doctor can pull skin and underlying tissues such as muscles and connective tissues in order to smooth the skin and free it of wrinkles.
The other kinds of cuts that can be made for facelifts can be a bit less lengthy, but they all do the same thing underneath. Tissues, skin and other matter are still pulled and removed if needed, and then skin and tissues are stapled or sutured to leave a tight and smooth appearance. The incisions will scar over.
Facelifts are considered major surgery, so patients usually have to have their facelifts done at a hospital or at a surgery center, not in office. They will require general anesthesia, and that is the reason that the procedure can't be done in-office. The procedure is also relatively complex.
Depending on the type of facelift that a patient has and the severity of the wrinkles and aging that needs to be corrected, the recovery time for a facelift procedure may vary. Some patients may have no trouble at all recovering while others may take a little more time to feel like themselves again.
Don't choose to get a facelift without doing a lot of research. There are many different ways to make yourself look younger - including other plastic surgery procedures that require less invasive techniques. Your plastic surgeon will be sure to let you know the right thing for you.
