In actuality, some of the best strategies to combat the effects of aging are time tested and common sense based. It seems in the never ending search for the quick fix, people are more willing than ever to open their wallet for marketing driven hype. Often times, the biggest obstacle to feeling young is our health. Nagging, chronic health problems often get in the way of feeling our best and doing our best. While some health conditions are unavoidable, others are easily kept at bay by simple alterations to our daily routines.

While concentrating on physical health is important, it's also appropriate to consider mental health. Keeping our mental health in optimum condition is a key to combat aging. Even though we'll all get older, it doesn't have to mean looking or feeling less than our absolute best.

Here are the top 10 anti aging tips you can start today:

1. Instead of that second cup of coffee, drink a big glass of water instead. Everyone knows that water is good for us, so why not take advantage? Water helps your skin, the digestion process, and function of key internal organs.

2. Get some sleep. Sounds simple enough, but the key here is making sure your sleep environment is as comfortable and as free from distractions as possible. Deep, restful sleep will invigorate you and add positive benefit to other aspects of your life.

3. Let's go for a walk! Even a short daily walk has health benefits, as well as being a great stress reducer. Reducing stress is a key strategy to combat aging.

4. Stretch for five minutes every day. Flexibility diminishes as we grow older. Stretch your limbs, back, and other muscle groups often.

5. Work on your balance. Older people often struggle with balance. Don't stuggle with yours. Perform simple balance exercises like standing on one foot for 20-30 seconds. You'll notice positive differences after just a few days.

6. Work your mind. Be sure to do things every day that challenge your mind. Make sure your mind gets a proper workout by engaging in challenging mental activities like puzzles, group activities, or classes.

7. Check in with old friends. If you're like most people, you've said to yourself more than once, "whatever happend to so and so?". Reconnecting with old friends increases your social circle, giving you something to look forward to and helping to keep your mind sharp.

8. Eat more fresh fish. While there are dozens of healthy eating suggestions we can discuss, eating fresh fish is an easy strategy to implement. Try substituting fresh fish for red meat once a week. Your body and mind will both enjoy the health benefits.

9. Write down your goals. This is such an underrated activity that keeps you on track and improves focus. Spend a few minutes before you go to sleep to write down what you want to accomplish the next day. Yes, it does make a difference to write it down!

10. Adopt a new friend. Get a pet, as there are millions of shelter animals wanting a good home and someone to love. Studies show pet owners are more active, live longer lives, and have broader social circles. And, don't underestimate all the companionship and enjoyment a pet will bring to your life.
