Scenario:
Michael Brazzo, a 47-year old father of three wanted to get in better shape after no physical exercise or activity on a consistent basis since his collegiate years. He described to me how he wanted to focus his efforts on his stamina and endurance while his main goal was slimming down his increasing waist line. Michael also needed to lose a total of 40 pounds to help boost his confidence and get his doctor off his back. His one main concern however, was that his knees and lower back ached constantly when he moved about. He told me it didn't matter whether he was hurrying to keep up with his children or simply walking down the street.
After speaking with Michael for a few minutes, and determining just what his fitness goals consisted of, I could tell that he was definitely motivated with his purpose in mind and had even set a date of achievement of six months in losing those 40 pounds and improving his cardiorespiaratory endurance.
Solution:
I needed Michael to realize that this was a major goal that he had set for himself and was not some fly-by-night wish. "It's achieveable," I said. "As long as you can stick with this exercise program and keep your motivation high." I had Michael understand that he didn't gain the weight overnight and therefore wouldn't lose it all overnight either. The goal that he had realisticly set for himself of six months was fine, but I instructed him that if he only lost 30 pounds in that same time frame, he shouldn't become discouraged. To the contrary! He would still be well on his way towards his success. The six month benchmark is only that, a benchmark. It must be adjusted and tweaked as time goes forward.
My main solution in helping Michael was in protecting his back and knees from further discomfort during exercise. We both agreed that he wouldn't want to continue if they began to ache during his workouts. The right alternative for Michael was an elliptical trainer. The Nautilus NE 3000 Elliptical Crosstrainer would be his perfect fit.
Like all elliptical trainers, the NE 3000 provides a smooth and impact-free workout that would provide Michael complete comfort in the knees, ankles, hips, and back. I also reasoned that the machine's upper body arms would provide an additional calorie burning deficit in Michael while the adjustable resistance of the elliptical would offer Michael's body a great opportunity to adapt to the workout and then challenge his body with an even higher setting.
Another reason why I liked the NE 3000 specificly for Michael, was that it came with it's patented SyncLink technology that allowed for articulating food pedals that function with the natural progression of Michael's body. This certainly helped aid his joints when Michael really gets moving fast on the Nautilus 3000.
Result:
Michael was amazingly excited once he lost his first few pounds of fat. He stuck with his plan, made some small modifications along the way, and actually exceeded his goal of 40 pounds in six months. He lost 47! Michael is now able to keep up with all three of his active children.
I actually had the chance to catch up with Michael just a few weeks ago and asked him to sum up his exercise experience. "I was surprised, to say the least," he said smiling. "I was surprised at how easy my body adapted to the exercise once I found my groove. It just worked for me!"
Michael has actually gone a step further and lost an additional 17 pounds since his initial weight loss of over 40 pounds. Although he says he still has a little bit more to lose, Michael is in great spirts about his remarkable accomplishment, and what's even more important is that he views exercise as a fun and rewarding activity!
