The sunny Caribbean island of Barbados has always had pulling power for Brits, but the hazy, lazy Commonwealth country is about to trade up a notch, with an investment portfolio that will make some lucky people a lot of money. British sailors who landed on Barbados in 1625 arrived at the site of present-day Holetown. At the time it was inhabited only by the feral pigs descended from those left behind by the Portuguese. From the arrival of the first British settlers in 1627 1628 until independence in 1966, Barbados was under uninterrupted British control. Nevertheless, Barbados always enjoyed a large measure of local autonomy. Its House of Assembly began meeting in 1639. Among the initial important British figures was Sir William Courten.

A five-star holiday resort is being developed in a secluded bay, with early bird investors being offered bargain priced apartments and villas for just £1,000 cash down and guaranteed mortgages. By the time the resort is complete the value of the properties is expected to have risen significantly as more tourists flock in and the island begins to cope with the rising demand for upmarket holiday homes.

Already Virgin has told the developers of Merricks Beach Resort that they plan to increase the number of flights to Barbados when the development is complete; such is the significance of what is a major new move for the pro-British island and its friendly outlook. They will be helped by a major expansion of the island’s international airport, with other airlines and tour operators almost certainly following
Virgin.

Sufficient high quality accommodation for holidaymakers has always been a problem for Barbados, but this shortfall is now being put right and it will mean tourist money flowing into the country, said specialist EdwinaSilver, MD of Premier Overseas Properties Ltd. For investors this is just another prime example of the rise and rise of the Caribbean as a favourite destination for Brits.

Merricks Resort is being built on a site which will include exclusive stunning cliff- top villas, studios, apartments and luxury penthouses - all available now at off plan prices with potential high rental yields and significant capital gains.Included in the resort are 14 four-storey buildings, each with 10 luxury
studios, all with balconies and many with ocean views. Premier Overseas Properties Ltd say all studio
and apartments are at least a third larger than standard hotel accommodation - making them attractive to holidaymakers and honeymooners.
