Yet Another Lifelock Review -- This One's Different. | Insurance

Are you secure? Do you worry about your security? What do you worry about most?

Being mugged? Getting sued?

Did you know you are more likely to suffer from identity theft than from these other things?

I'll explain it like this:

Hackers, dishonest waiters, people calling on the phone posing as a representative from a reputable business. There are people in your country, and in other countries trying to steal your identity, so they can use it to secure money or goods without paying for it themselves. And they're getting really good at it.

If you are ever a victim of identity theft, it's a nightmare. Creditors call you out of the blue for things you know nothing about -- and they're mad at you, because YOU owe them money. And that's just the start of it.

It can ruin your life. It can lead you to large debts. It can force you to declare bankruptcy.

Now, there's a saying in the old country: scams beget scams.

I'm sure you've seen some of the identity protection schemes on the market today. It's hard not to notice. Todd Davis, founder of Lifelock -- he's the one who shouts his social security number to the masses -- offers just one solution. Trusted ID is another. And more are popping up all the time.

Most of them work in similar ways, but Lifelock is the biggest, so I'm going to focus on them. The question is this: Are these services for real? Will they really help you protect your identity against domestic and foreign thieves?

Are they just playing a numbers game? Getting a million people to pay a monthly fee just to pay out a little bit here and there, and banking the rest?

Well, I looked into Lifelock, and I found that they actually do a whole lot more than this. Here's what they do:

First, Lifelock does something for you every 90 days. They put a fraud allert on your account. This makes the credit bureaus check to see if there's any fraudulent activity being done in your name.

Second, Lifelock requests a credit report for you on your behalf every single year.

Third, Lifelock guarantees any losses up to a million dollars.

Fourth, they tell credit card companies not to mail you any offers for "pre-approved" cards. This is one of the biggest sources of identity theft.

Fifth, they keep a large budget of lawyers on hand to help you with any identity-related trouble you encounter.

In the end I find myself recommending Lifelock and other identity protection systems. They should help you rest easy knowing that they will prevent much identity theft, and be there for you in case something does happen.

If you've got $10/month to spend on this kind of insurance, it will be money well spent -- especially if something happens.
