A debt assistance provider may be able to help you get your head above water again should you feel like you are drowning in debt. However, consider whether you can get out of debt on your own before you take the plunge into debt assistance.

A Second Job

The easiest possible way to reduce your debt quickly without resorting to debt assistance is to acquire a second job. Earmark your earnings on your second job to getting out of debt. Apply the savings toward the debt with the highest interest first, then the next highest interest rate, etc.

If you don't believe you have the time, strength or energy to work a second job away from home, consider working your second job in the comfort of your home. With a high speed internet connection, many jobs such as web designing and copy writing can be done at home.

Sell What You Already Have

Look around your house and consider what you could sell, and apply the proceeds of sale toward reducing your debt. Maybe you have a collection of some knick-knacks or childhood merchandise that you could easily sell on craigslist or eBay. You may even try the classified ads in your local newspaper.

Another option is to have an old-fashioned garage sale. You may be surprised at how quickly you can make several hundred or even a thousand dollars by selling your excess possessions. As with the second job, be sure to apply all proceeds from the sale of these items to getting out of debt. This money is not a windfall; it is a means of providing debt assistance so you can reduce the crushing load of debt on your life.

Get Credit Counseling

If the foregoing efforts are not enough to reduce your debt sufficiently,or at least considerably it, then credit counseling is the next step of debt assistance that can really start to make a difference in your life. A personal face-to-face meeting with an experienced credit counselor assist you with needed resources you to manage your your finances and your debt. You can learn how to set up a budget, maybe for the first time in your life, and how to stick with it.

Together, you and your credit counselor will set up a debt management plan that includes all your creditors and all of your debt. The plan will leave you with enough money so you don't feel too deprived. That way you will be able to stick to the plan over the months or years that it takes to conquer debt.

Have Patience

It has been proven to work with this kind of debt assistance. It normally takes someone up to six years to get all their debts reduced to a managable level or paid off. However, do not extend the process by acquiring new debt while you undergo any debt assistance program.
