Planning For a Party Made Simple | Family

You can call me a slug and I won't take offense. I mean I enjoy parties and even love having them in my own home. There is nothing like the sparkle of good conversation. But the work involved can overwhelm me. First there is the cleaning (my home is never pristine). Then I have to shop and cook and think about the table decor. It's a bit much for someone who'd rather relax.

Occasionally, I watch those cooking and entertaining shows that assure one that putting together a party is so very simple and fun. They serve unique meals that all the guests rave about, have the perfect dcor, and even have a "theme" for the party. There is not a paper plate or stain in the carpet to be found on those programs. I am often lulled into thinking that I can pull off such a perfect party with perfect ease. After all, it only took 30 minutes on the TV program.

I love my home - it's comfy and roomy. But clean? Rarely. And we live on budgets so we don't have a designer decor. Getting the table set with a clean tablecloth is a big event for us. It's a family home and one well lived in. It's not party central.

Sometimes after I think I want to have a party I start to doubt whether I should have the party. The huge amount of work required just to get close to the level of opulent entertaining starts to present itself. And the demands of home and family make me realize that perhaps I was thinking too big.

Of course I eventually snap out of it. I mean when I go to my friends houses for parties its no formal affair and I like that. No one's home is spotless and they, like we, have what could be embarrassing stains on their carpet. There place settings may not all match and, funny, that has no impact on the fun we have.

I am truly blessed to have great family and friends. These great folks don't expect me to be perfect and would wonder if I had lost my marbles if I tried to put on the perfect party event. No they just want to relax and enjoy the companionship. What a wonderful gift! I need nothing more.
