World Youth Day (WYD) is by far the largest youth event in the world and is held by a host country every two to three years. This year the WYD 2008 event host is Sydney, Australia and it is expected that up to 225,000 young people from within Australia and around the globe will attend. The event starts on Tuesday 15th of July and ends on Sunday 20 July. This year will also see the first ever visit to Australia by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

The last WYD event was held in Cologne where over 400,000 pilgrims registered for the event. Pope John Paul II established WYD in 1986 His aim was to have a regular meeting of young Catholics from all around the world so to celebrate and learn more about their faith and fellow youth.

According to the 'United Nations' their definition of youth is anyone who is between the age of 15 years and 24 years. However societies around the world all have their own definition of what age applies to youth. It is generally accepted throughout the majority of countries that the terms teenager, adolescent or young person all define the word youth.

Young people face new challenges as they develop during their youth. Not only do they leave behind the ways of childhood and learn the ways of adults but there are also physiological changes they must deal with. In most cases family and friends will help and support them during this period. Events like WYD2008 go a long way in helping young people as it provides the opportunity to meet their peers and discus common issues.

We all need support and reassurance at times in our lives and none more so than the period of youth where a person will experiment in various ways as they strive to establish their unique identity in the adult world. This experimental phase can be trying for parents who understand the changes taking place and need to adjust to this new experience.

Everyone in society can play their part in assisting our youth and elevating their understanding. At school the teachers can have great influence on students and in sport youth may look up to their heroes. Religious instruction plays a very important role in helping youth to understand their purpose in life and the importance of God role in their lives.

World Youth Day Australia will provide our young people the opportunity to connect with God as one, to celebrate and give thanks for all God's work. In the world of uncertainty that we live in it is vital that todays youth receive the strength needed to overcome the challenges. Pilgrims from across the globe will unite together in June to show the world that the faith of youth is strong and that with God's grace all the challenges will be met and overcome.
