I love to write. I have found that writing forces me to examine myself, to figure out what is most important to me. Maybe it's the act of putting my feelings down on paper. Somehow it seems more permanent. I guess I feel that if I am going to go to all of the trouble to write something down, it should be something worthwhile.
I recently began to think about what type of legacy I would be leaving after I passed away. None of this was in a morbid sense, I just began to wonder what my kids and those around me would most remember about me after I was gone. Would they clearly be able to know what I stood for?
With that in mind, I will spend the next several days trying to share with you my thoughts on the life lessons I have tried to teach my kids.
One of the strangest things I have noticed over the past several years is that life is much more serious than in the past. It seems as if people are just tenser. It's almost like people have just forgotten how to be just a bit goofy and silly.
It is very easy to get caught up in all of this and miss all of the wonderful things going on around us.
In our house, we have made it a rule that some serious silliness can happen at any moment. The other night a couple of my kids were in the other room wrestling and carrying on. The problem was that I didn't think they were being loud enough for the neighbors down the street to hear.
I threw the dish towel aside and run into the living room with my hands waving frantically over my head and screaming my own rendition of a war cry. Suddenly my kids were screaming in delight as I pounced on the group and the tickle wars began. Within minutes my wife and oldest son were bounding down the stairs and jumping into the fray. For the next twenty minutes or so it was pure chaos in my house, and I could not have been any happier.
When I have a chance to reflect on those moments, I can't help but smile. I can always picture the big smiles on my kid's faces. Our kids all grow up way to fast, make sure that the time you have with them is as fun-filled and crazy as possible. After all, isn't that what life should be about?
