Eight crucial steps you must add to your wedding shower checklist:

Who should host the shower?

The maid of honour is normally the person who plans and hosts the wedding shower. However, if someone else can devote more time for the preparation, then by all means let them do it. This could be any friends or family members of the bride.

When should you hold your shower?

The bride and family members will already be busy preparing for the actual wedding. Therefore, it's best to have it quite far in advance of the wedding, usually about six weeks beforehand.

Therefore it is necessary to include the bride in the planning when it comes to setting a date and time. A traditional 'girl-only' party could be a Sunday brunch, a midweek lunch or an afternoon tea garden party.

Who should get invited

Apart from your family members, the host should invite people you know well whether it be friends, relatives or work colleagues. You don't want to invite too many people, as a large group tends to split off in small separate groups.

You will no doubt be organizing party games for your guests to scream and laugh at, but you don't want anyone missing out of the fun do you? Therefore, a good number is about 10-20 people. This way, everyone should be able to interact with each other.

What's your theme?

It's more fun to have a theme for your shower. It can be more fun than your wedding theme. Use this theme throughout the rest of your shower planning as outlined in this checklist.

A kitchen theme is always a good one as there are so many kitchen items and accessories to buy. Having said that there are dozens to pick and choose from.

You will know the lifestyle of the bride and groom so choosing a theme around them should'nt be that difficult. If they are gym goers and are into fitness, then a health & fitness theme would be a good idea.

Food, favors, games and thank you cards

Food: The menu for the food would depend on two factors. One, the location of your party and two, the theme you are having. If you were to have a wine-tasting theme, for example, a finger buffet consisting of small nibbles with cheese and crackers would be appropriate.

Favors: Some people choose not to give shower favors. It really depends on where you live and if it is a tradition in your area or not. If you do, you don't have to go overboard with favors if you want to keep the expense down.

Games: This is the fun part. Shower games are great ice-breakers for everyone getting to know each other. Games can consist of bingo and the memory game (what's in the bag).

Thank You Notes: Letting your guests know that you really appreciate what they have done, and for the gifts they have brought you is important. Sending each one a thank-you card is a great gesture to show your appreciation.

Summary

A lot of planning and organising is involved in preparing for a bridal shower party. However, it is always worth it for your guests to have a great fun time and the bride and groom receive lovely practical gifts for their hobby or their home.
