There are many reasons why you should use reusable grocery bags. Reusable shopping bags are eco-friendly and look great. They send a powerful message to other people, and they are starting to even be required at some places. Some grocery stores are making their customers pay 5 cents for each of their grocery bags, to help them cut down on their plastic bag use.
Plastic is one of the greatest inventions of all time, but it is also one of the most harmful elements to mother earth. Plastic usually takes thousands of years to break down. Microorganisms are responsible for the breakdown of plastic, but the ones that breakdown plastic are hard to find in nature. One boy one the Canadian science fair for isolating the one responsible for breaking down plastic bags and he made a bag break down in only 3 months. It would be great if every bag would biodegrade in 3 months, but it is not reality. Reality tells us that if we keep creating all of this garbage that eventually we will have no where to keep it all.
The very best thing that you can do is to use reusable grocery bags. Reusable shopping bags can be used for grocerys or for any kind of shopping. They look a lot better than any other kind of grocery bag, and whenever someone else sees someone using a reusable grocery bag, it puts a message in their head of saving the globe.
I am a big supporter of making people pay for their plastic bag usage. 5 cents per bag is a good amount, but I feel that it should be more, at least 25 cents or even a dollar. I think that it is stupid to give up our world just for our own convenience. Of course, not many people would want to shop at your stores if you charged a dollar for a grocery bag, so a different thing that you could do is only use paper grocery bags.
Paper breaks down easy and is durable. Paper grocery bags are hard to carry, so a reinforced paper grocery bag with a handle cut out would work. Something like a mall grocery bag would work well. Many people spend well over $100 shopping, and if they use these kind of bags at clothing stores, then there is no reason why they can't use them at grocery stores. A strong, paper grocery bag with a rope handle would be perfect for grocery shopping and would still be good for mother earth.
I hope you take this article to heart and seriously consider buying some cheap reusable grocery bags.
