It can be tough for a parent to choose between these two options when looking at birthday and Christmas presents: a gift you want your children to dive into but there is the risk they will not be happy with it; a gift which is a big hit but may rob your child of free time better spent outdoors taking part in the real game called life.
Therefore, what is the best gift to give to your child when you have to choose between video games and books?
Let us look at the pros and cons of each.
The gift of reading
Cons: The child may have a short attention span, not like books or simply find them to be the domain of the old. When you give the gift of a book to a child, you may get a blank stare and emotionless 'Oh, thank you' response, hardly what you want for something you spent so much time thinking about.
Pros: Reading a book will not only help your child's mind develop, but it will help them nurture their imagination as they explore far away lands, detective stories, or simple young-adult stories.
The dependable video game
Cons: The most obvious disadvantage is that your child will spend a lot of precious time sitting on the couch blasting aliens and hitting virtual home runs when they could be outside breathing fresh air and playing outside with their friends. Obesity, headaches and lack of sleep can also result in those who become too much involved in the games.
Pros: The gift is guaranteed to be a hit. A video game is something every young person wants as a gift. If you want to keep him indoors for weeks on end, then a video game would be the best solution. One beneficial physical aspect of playing video games is the development of higher reflexes and hand-eye co-ordination.
The best choice?
There is no real best choice in this situation. Some kids simply do not want to read books and there is nothing wrong with that. On the other hand, some kids do not want to play video games and would prefer reading under a tree. Perhaps the best option is an incentive program for you child. Buy them a book and if they read it, they get a game.
Either way, choose the gift that you know will make your child happy because in the end, that is all that really matters.
