The Demise of Classical Education and Where We Are Now | Education

There is a serious problem with the minds of young people today, and the demise of classical education is a direct cause. When classical education dies, so too do the ideas, visions, and values of classical Greece and Rome die with it. These ideas and values were what helped create Western civilization.

Ironically, these are the ideas that have come under scrutiny in our own universities. Very few people in America know about the origins of the West in ancient Greece.

Knowing these ethical theories and philosophies are vital to understanding and maintaining the freedoms we cherish. Sadly, Americans are moving further and further away from them.

Our nation was built on the foundation of Greek wisdom, and it's important for us to remember that.

We applied many of these philosophies into our governmental make-up: a constitutional government, individual rights, freedom of expression, an open economy, civilian control of the military, separation of religious and political authority, private property, free scientific inquiry, and open dissent. These are some of the things that we need now more than ever in our changing culture.

It's also important to remember that the Greeks believed in monitoring and controlling these freedoms with civic responsibility, and absolute world view, and philanthropy.

The Greeks did not believe that life was rosy; instead, they saw it as momentary and tragic. Concepts like this along with self-criticism kept things in check.

The demise of classical education leaves us with a skewed and incomplete way of looking at the world. In its place are lenses which gives us a look at the world that consists of blind allegiance, an adoration of material culture, therapeutics, and moral relativism.

For better or worse, the Greeks gave us the means to influence the physical and spiritual universe. They even gave us the means for us to control our animal instincts so that we can instead contribute to the greater good.

We could stand by and hope that when the classics completely die, our children will get through the educational Dark Age and enter a new Greek era-- or we can fight the demise of classical education now.

If we don't want our children to be a part of this overwhelming darkness, we need to find a way to teach our children how to think for themselves and how to be thankful to the Greeks for what they modeled for our nation.
