Home schooling is not a fad that has just become popular these days; it has been used in some form of the other for centuries. However, the rise in home schooling in modern day America can be attributed to the dissatisfaction with how our tax dollars are being spent in public school systems.

Homeschooling is no longer a 'hippie' or strange thing as more and more families in the US are opting to educate their children themselves where they have better control of what they are learning.

Extracurricular activities, science experiments, music class, art fairs and the like are extra stuff you have to make the effort to do in home schooling so that your child gets a holistic approach to education not just books and pens.

Homeschooling can solve these problems provided you are willing to make the commitment to spend a lot of time with your child. Some parents love sending their kids to school as they feel they get some time on their own do stuff inside or outside the house.

If your kids ask questions about why there is such a fuss about the upcoming presidential election, parents will take the opportunity to take them to the library, read a little about past presidents, introduce them to the constitution and then have some hands on activities like trying to come up with a campaign or a fundraising idea on their own.

Choose a Curriculum - You will need to look through several books on homeschooling and sift out materials that you feel will interest your child. You will also need to spend money on teaching materials, text books, school supplies, dry erase boards, workbooks and the like so that your child gets the concepts you are trying to impart. You will also need to have oodles and oodles of patience so that you can enjoy teaching and keep your child engaged in the lesson.

You will need to manage time in a way that you are at par with the outline you have designed or one that you are following from a book so that your child is not lagging in any subject area.

Both sides have their points and there is no correct answer. You need to see what works for your family. Perhaps give it a trial run in the summer and then see if home schooling works for you and your children; good luck.
