Experience is arguably the number one requirement that a majority of employers look for in electricians. So it is no surprise that as a fresh graduate, you may encounter issues and hit a few snags when applying for a position. Your best bet is to garner field experience first through an apprenticeship program. A number of electrician schools are out there to accommodate you. Training is also available through other alternatives such as online courses and sponsored schools by the government.
Being an electrician is not a proverbial walk in the park. You have to undergo serious training before you can fix any type of wiring problem or wear an official electrician's uniform. Fortunately, there are electrician courses offered by government-owned schools, independent institutions and online courses.
Electrician courses offer a multitude of specializations for various type of wiring. You have to select a proper specialization once you enroll in an electrician course. If you want to master more than one field, you can simply re-enroll in an electrician course and pick a different specialization, after you finish your original course.
Electrician courses also give students a series of practical exams before proceeding with the written final exam. These practical exams entail apprentices to accompany real electricians during jobs. During the first few jobs, apprentices will act as assistants to their electrician professors. The apprentices will simply observe how an actual electrician untangles various types of wiring problems. Midway through the course, the apprentices will get a crack of the actual job as their professors will supervise them through every procedure.
One can easily find a suitable place for their apprenticeship training, as postings and job openings can be found in many different places. The Internet, for one, has numerous sites to find companies on the lookout for a willing-to-be-trained apprentice. Newspapers and other prints also regularly have job openings and advertisements that may lead you to your next step. There are also certain advantages that go with being an apprentice. One is the amount of training you will get for your job. It may also happen for you that the company that has accepted you as apprentice would end up directly hiring you as an employee if they find your performance more than satisfactory.
