There are many things that a restaurant owner is prepared for, but what about assisting someone that ends up chocking while there are eating food? Some will say this is looking for the negative in things but the risk is very high since people will always show up to this type of business due to the fact that they are hungry. One moment a person can be talking and enjoying their food and they next they are panicked and fighting for air.
If you know what to do when someone is choking you can easily assist them. This is something you need to be able to do very rapidly. The faster you can remove the object the less risk there is of the person not being able to breathe. Too many times though when something like this happens the person is sitting there for several minutes before someone comes to their aid.
Set a good example for your restaurant by knowing how to help those that may be choking. It isn't something that is mandated but something you will feel good about being able to do. The last think you want to do is feel completely helpless when one of your dining guests is in such trouble. Think about other responsible staff that can also perform such procedures should you not be around.
Check around locally and you should be able to find plenty of first aid classes to teach you about it. They may be offered during they day, at night, or on the weekend so you can be sure you will be able to find one that accommodates your schedule. If there is a cost to attend the class it won't be very much. Generally that cost is only to pay for your book that you get to keep.
As their boss you need to tell them that there won't be any cost to them. You also need to let them know you will be paying them for the time they spend at the training. It is wrong to expect them to give up that time and not to be compensated for it. Should you have staff that just aren't comfortable with such procedures it isn't a good idea to force them into attending.
You may not realize that you can use one technique when an adult or older child is choking and then another for a very small child. It is important to know them both because you just never know who it may be that is choking. Many assume that parents of small children understand what to do when they choke. This is common misconception and many of them will be frozen with fear if such an event does occur.
Take your time to really look for a well taught class on the subject. Find out the credentials of the trainers and the techniques they will cover. CPR should also be part of the curriculum as some people won't be able to automatically start breathing again after the air has been cut off while choking. The very best training courses have mannequins that are offered for people to practice on. This hands on training really does make a difference. It can allow you to go from just trying to memorize the process to really understanding how it all comes together.
Hopefully you will never have to experience someone choking as they are trying to enjoy the food you serve in your restaurant. Yet it is a possible scenario and it is the responsible business owner that is always prepared for anything to happen. As the leader of your restaurant business you can set a very good example for those that work for you by taking the time to be prepared for such needs from your customers.
