Building Your Persuasion Muscle | Negotiation

Over the last few years I've become a new man. How? Well, I'm finally becoming congruent with my thoughts and my body. I've shed over one hundred and forty unwanted pounds of fat. A new lease on life and a new attitude toward the gym, as well as a drastically revised relationship with food have combined to achieve huge results for me.

When my weight was at its height, I was over 425 pounds. I was diabetic and near death. And I was certainly no where near being able to stay on the treadmill or stationary bike for an hour at a time. Now I spend an hour a day, every day, at the gym. The results are improving my life on all fronts.

This might seem like I'm giving myself a big pat on the back. Well, sort of, I suppose. I'm proud of myself, for sure, but my interest in talking about this has more to do with wanting to discuss patience, perserverance and self persuasion. These are all muscles which can be built up (just like a bicep).

To learn persuasion, one day a week isn't going to be enough to pump you up. It's like trying to work out one day a week and expecting amazing results. Building muscle requires consistency. Frequent short periods of exercise and study are of more benefit than one three hour stretch of exercise performed less frequently.

Research aside, it's incredibly easy to find ten or fifteen minutes a few times a day to study as opposed to a larger chunk of time.

Patience. . .it's not easy for many of us to allow things to unravel, to happen over time. We are action oriented people. We want to do, to make, to move, to shake. We get things done and move on to do more. My advice is, become more comfortable with patience. There are some things that can happen immediately. Persuasion is not one of them. It's multi-layered and highly variable. There is absolutely no way you (or I) can learn it all at once.

However, I've done everything I can to make this process smoother. I've made significant advances in distilling persuasion to it's very essence. It will still take time. Think of it as ongoing. At this point in time, we are at the forefront of persuasion. Neuro science is making incredible strides in the mind/body connection that we are able to utilize in each session, with each exercise and in each seminar.

That's a lot to digest. (Back to the food metaphors!)

With our intentions firmly set to learn all that we can about how to influence, we add layer upon layer of persuasion muscle to our work lives, personal lives and public lives. Slowly (depending on how much energy you're willing to put out), but surely we will build our persuasion arsenals into tight, toned, compact, (or bulky, depending on your taste), versatile, strong, and powerful tools. I can't tell you how much it thrills me to be your persuasion personal trainer.
