A quick glance through any celebrity gossip magazine would instantly highlight the fact every actor, actress, sports star, IT girl or wannabe have unnaturally white teeth. In some cases celebrities' teeth are gleaming so intensely it is the first, and only, noticeable thing. In the last decade teeth whitening has really taken off, today, anyone sporting bad or stained nashers is instantly slated by the press. With dozens of different methods, catchy names such as 'zoom whitening' and even DIY whitening kits available from chemists, what's stopping you putting the star back in your smile?

Teeth can lose their colour very easily. The most common reason for discoloration is teeth getting stained from excess consumption of tea, coffee, fizzy drinks, alcohol and of course, cigarettes. Unfortunately even if you avoid the above, your teeth can simply discolour over time, since aging will naturally cause teeth to lose their shine. Additionally teeth discoloration is genetic, so if your parents' teeth are tainted naturally, there is a very strong possibility your teeth will follow suit.

Before jumping on the bleached teeth band wagon, there are some definite steps to consider and be wary of. According to the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) teeth whitening is the most popular form of dental treatment in the UK, however this huge amount of interest and popularity brings about a number of copy cat and knock off products, claiming to whiten teeth as well as the leading dentists can. Firstly the whitening process involves applying chemicals to the surface of teeth, which can damage the enamel, gums and other sensitive areas such as the lips, therefore it is always recommended that only qualified and experienced dentists should carry out the delicate procedure.

Unfortunately not everyone can afford the same dentistry options as the stars, however the DIY whitening kit from the chemists might not be as cost effective as first thought. There have been numerous complaints about these products, ranging from dislikeable taste to excruciating pain experienced in gums. To make matters worse, none of the reported whitening kits' results have been as effective or successful as promised.

In conclusion don't be afraid to contemplate whitening your teeth, you too can have a smile suitable for any celebrity gossip magazine. Teeth whitening procedures have come a long way in the last decade; it is now one of the safest, easiest and painless cosmetic surgery procedures available. Do not hide away your smile because you are embarrassed to show stained, aged teeth. Brighten everyone's day with your pearly whites.
