A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that is designed to adjust the size and shape of a woman's labial area through paring back an area that is thought to be too fleshy. The vaginal and labial areas can often be places that are very problematic for women, and given the fact that the appearance of the labia themselves are usually beyond a woman's control, this can add to the stress.

The appearance of a woman's labia majora and labia minora can be affected by things like aging, genetics, or the experiences of sexual intercourse and childbirth. Women may very well become uncomfortable with the appearance of labia that are not symmetrical or that they perceive as being too long or wide. For some women it is a matter of comfort; labia that are too large can become easily oversensitive, inflamed and even infected through normal abrasion.

Women whose bodies are still developing should not have this procedure. This is a procedure meant for fully grown adults who are in all around good health - your doctor will want to make sure you are in good shape before undergoing a labiaplasty. Those with some medical conditions should not have the surgery. Your plastic surgeon will be able to furnish you with detailed information on exactly who can ,as well as who should not have a labiaplasty. This is a surgery not every plastic surgeon performs, so your surgeon will probably be a specialist and therefore be very knowledgeable about it.

Labiaplasty is not really all that difficult of a surgery, however this does depend on the end result the patient wants. The length and difficulty of the procedure depends on whether the outer lips (labia majora), inner lips (labia minora), or both are to be altered. The surgery normally takes in the neighborhood of two hours and can be done under local anesthetic as an outpatient procedure.

Bruising and swelling are normal following the procedure, but this will go away in a few weeks. Antibiotics and analgesics are often prescribed during recovery. If antibiotics have been prescribed to you, eat yogurt or take acidophilus supplements during the recovery period to ensure a healthy bacterial balance in your body. There will also be a list of things not to do during recovery to ensure successful healing.

Labiaplasty has helped many women. If you are interested in this procedure, consult with a board certified plastic surgeon about the procedure and what you could expect from this surgery.
