When you first meet a person, you generally notice their smile first. In the world of beauty, and aestheticism, white teeth are a must for most people. Cosmetic teeth whitening reigns supreme in a world of shiny white teeth. Ads focus on getting your teeth bright for that perfect date, or having a better appearance overall.

There are a few methods for whitening your teeth. They include using bleach, hydrogen peroxide, over the counter strips, professional methods, or using simple whitening products; such as toothpaste with baking soda. Bleaching is not recommended, because it strips your teeth of its natural enamel. Hydrogen peroxide also does this, but it is safe to do it about once per year. Over the counter strips should not be abused, and should only be used a maximum of two times per year. They work by penetrating the enamel, but the real whitening occurs behind your teeth, where the most staining occurs and shines through.

White teeth are beneficial, especially if you have a career that relies on you smiling and talking to people. White smiles are more desirable than a yellowish smile would be. If you want dramatic results, a dentists office can provide that within an hour, or you can use a take home kit that takes 1 hour or longer for a more economical price. Over the counter treatments are even more economical, but are also not as long lasting.

Habits such as smoking and constantly consuming dark liquids transforms your white teeth into yellow ones over time. Your habits as a child will greatly impact how white your adult teeth are, and that can determine many factors. You can reverse these signs though, through refraining from dark foods and liquids, and brushing at least 2 times per day with a whitening agent.

Keeping your smile bright is almost as fun as getting your teeth pulled. It requires a lot of restrictions from dark foods and liquids, not to mention a completely new oral hygiene regimen. Many doctors recommend toothpaste with peroxide and baking soda, and enamel brightening mouthwashes. In about a week you should be able to bring those things back into your diet, but your results will last longer if you avoid them all together.

In the end, whitening your teeth is a fantastic way to spruce up your look, and get a quick makeover. As with all procedures that alter your body, there are a few risks. Sensitivity, irritation, and Technicolor teeth are among the most common problems. Afterwards, enjoy your brilliant new smile!
